We figured out (the second summer we had Tug) that ice is the best thing for cooking him off and hydrating him. A quick wipe of the paws with a cold, wet towel cools him off (as does a bath) but if he drinks water too quickly he'll throw it back up. Ice, however, he'll lick til it's small enough to crunch on. We take it in the car since he won't drink water in a moving vehicle but he'll lick ice.
So, my handy, dandy super-mega-mart came through with a cheap ice shaver for snow cones. YUM! Best part is the new way to eat ice has Tug curious. I'll make a bowl full and put flavored syrup on it but, being a grown adult and not 10 years old anymore, I don't saturate it. This means the middle of the bowl is still plain ice. So, as I eat my snow cone, Tug sits and waits. About halfway through I'll put a teaspoon full of clean ice on the rug and he licks it all up. He looks around afterwards, licking his chops, and waits to see if there's going to be any more...
